Tears of Melancholy
Baroque Orchestra B’Rock and the KlaraFestival asked Anouk De Clercq to create video images to accompany the Tears of Melancholy concert, with music by Dowland, Britten, Muffat, Purcell and Hindemith. For this work, De Clercq filmed the B’Rock musicians while they listened to music of their own choice. During the concert, their portraits were shown on a screen, making it appear as if they too were part of the audience, at one with the audience, listening to themselves.
Tears of Melancholy reveals the beauty and the intimacy of the process of listening. What happens to someone when they listen to music? They are moved, carried away; their soul is touched. Being able to see this is a thing of great beauty: a portrait of listening.
