Nelson Makengo

Director, photographer and producer Nelson Makengo lives and works in Kinshasa. Makengo took part in the Berlinale Talents Station in 2020 and a residency at WIELS in 2018. He was a jury member at IDFA 2020, Visions du Réel and the International Documentary Association Awards in 2022-2023. He has collaborated with Al Jazeera and Meta. His short film E’ville (2018) won the Sharjah Art Foundation Award at the Videobrasil Biennale 2019. His short film Up at Night (2019), winner of the Best Documentary Short at IDFA 2019 and Poulain de Bronze at Fespaco 2021, has screened at over 100 festivals worldwide, including True False, Full Frame and Sundance in the US. In 2020, Up at Night was named one of the 50 best films of the year by the British Film Institute. Nelson Makengo is a fellow of the Sundance Documentary Film Institute and the Doha Film Institute.
