first films ♡ at first sight
As a teacher and editor, Fairuz Ghammam often sees ‘first films’. She believes that many of these gems should be shared with a larger audience more often. Free from standardised forms and conventional expectations, first films exude a freedom. For KASKcinema, Fairuz selects 9 first films by the hands of Andy Sarfo, Arshvir Dhillon, Flo Vanhorebeek, Hans Bryssinck, Jennifer Izere, Jinhuang John Ma, Myrthe Baptist, Sanae Khamlichii and Trésor Simpunga . They give us a glimpse of their first experience behind the camera and how it shaped them.
Thematically, the films share an intention to investigate what makes a home. The makers bring us into places where we witness routines and rituals, but also uncertain moments far from home. For each filmmaker, the camera is a tool to position themselves and develop their own visual language. Linguistically, the polyphony of the soundtracks is just as impressive, with Darija, Dutch, English, Farsi, French, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, and Twi.
